Carillon Festival 2013

9/21/13

It was a BEAUTIFUL day for the Carillon Festival this year.  The guest carillonneur was Geert D'hollander.

The day started with a Master Class.  Current students Carrie and Erin worked with Mr. D'hollander on their playing techniques.  The class was made available on the Carillon live web cam.

After the Master Class, the students moved over to Music Hall for a lecture on Writing Carillon Music by Geert D'hollander.  There were 8 people present for the lecture.  They all stayed for lunch afterwards to enjoy visiting with each other.

Mr. D'hollander debuted the winning composition for the Carillon Composition Competition.  This year's winner was Kyle Shaw, from Urbana, Illinois, with a piece titled Center Panel.  Dr. Tam said that she emailed Mr. Shaw late Friday night, so she didn't think he received the news in time to hear and see the performance on the web cam.

The weather was absolutely perfect for the 75-100 people that came for the main concert performed by Geert D'hollander.   A special group was in attendance - a group of Tau Beta Sigma students from the University of Northern Iowa, who were visiting their counterparts at Iowa State in the Music department.

Afterwards, the current carillon students gave campanile tours, while the Carillon Society hosted a reception with cookies and ice cream.

The next Carillon Festival will be Fall 2015.
